Annapolis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., formally known as the Gamma Omicron Sigma Chapter, was chartered on December 9, 1947 by the Eastern Regional Director, Muriel Jenkins. Five members: Sorors Lois D. Randall, Muriel Holland, Ruby C. Simms, Sylvia G. Richardson, and Mary C. Brown, chartered the local chapter.  Members of the Annapolis Alumnae Chapter walk in the footsteps of the Chapter’s Charter Members working diligently to implement programs that align with the National organization’s Five Point Programmatic Thrust: Educational Development, Economic Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement.

 

Annapolis Alumnae has given more than one quarter of a million dollars in scholarships to graduating seniors presented through the Muriel Holland Scholarship and the Outstanding Minority Scholar Awards Program. We award the scholarships based on high academic achievement, high involvement in school activities, and solid service to their communities. The scholars attend Ivy League and state or private colleges/universities, and HBCU’s with varied majors in engineering, biology, journalism, nursing, and computer science. The Chapter continues to make significant contributions to the future of our youth.

 

In 2015, the Chapter implemented the Thelma T. Daley STEM Initiative to create an environment that promotes and encourages an interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and enhances the school curriculum to shape potential science careers in elementary and middle school students in Anne Arundel County. At Delta’s 52nd National Convention the chapter's STEM resolution was one of 31 proposed resolutions adopted by the national body as an area of concern for the sorority. Annapolis Alumnae has provided hands-on STEM activities to over 275 youth in Anne Arundel County.

 

Annapolis Alumnae has been in the forefront of sponsoring community forums to educate residents on issues such as human trafficking, domestic violence, Opioid drugs, mental illness, and other physical and mental health issues. Partnering with Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Police and Fire Departments, MD State Task Forces, local medical and social work professionals, and churches for these programs has allowed us to focus on preventive measures and to support individuals and families. Also, the Chapter received an award of recognition for its financial planning and debt reduction program at Delta’s 50th Eastern Regional Conference. Providing voter registration, voter engagement, and GOTV assistance is done each year by the Chapter. Annapolis Alumnae continues its deep involvement in monitoring and supporting legislative bills to improve residents’ housing, health, education, and economic conditions.

 

Annapolis Alumnae has supported the Crofton Convalescent Center, the Crofton Baby Pantry, and summer camps for juvenile diabetes. Contributions to the Lighthouse Shelter, Parole Health Center, Anne Arundel County Medical Center, Morgan State University, and the Galesville Community Center have been made throughout the years. Each year the Chapter has provided meals and information for the homeless, school supplies to K-12 students, holiday baskets to underserved families, and supplies for infants and toddlers. Regular contributions are made to the Boys and Girls Club of Annapolis and partnering occurs yearly. Annapolis Alumnae has been actively involved in many efforts and projects to enrich, impact, serve, and transform the communities of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County. It is the commitment of the Annapolis Alumnae Chapter to continue collaboration and to serve, Always Advocating Community.
